Following the news winger Matt Ritchie will miss most of the season through injury after a challenge from Hamza Choudhury, Newcastle United supporters have been debating who will be their main spot-kick man in the Scotsman’s absence – and some of them have come to an almighty conclusion.
There are many credible candidates who could potentially take up the responsibility, players such as Jonjo Shelvey, Joelinton and even Miguel Almiron have been mentioned by a section of the fan base – but one name that constantly keeps popping up is defender Fabian Schar.
As most Newcastle supporters will know, Schar, 27, definitely has an eye for goal judging by his record – and his penalties scored throughout a long career may actually surprise a few on-lookers.
According to Transfermarkt, the Swiss international has converted seven penalties and missed just two, though he hasn’t actually taken one since October 2016.
However, for most Magpies, this record indicates a calmness from the spot and makes him a worthy nominee to take responsibility in future.
Here’s what they had to say on Twitter.
Schar is the only credible option on the list
