Newcastle United: Fans react to club’s birthday message to Temuri Ketsbaia

Plenty of Magpies reacted to a post from the club’s official Twitter account wishing former Newcastle United player Temuri Ketsbaia a happy birthday.

The Georgian famously shocked the footballing world at St James’ Park when he lashed out at the advertising boards after scoring the matchwinner against Bolton Wanderers.

Despite his fiery temper, remarkably Ketsbaia didn’t pick up a single red card during his time on Tyneside. After moving to Newcastle on a free transfer from Greek side AEK Athens, the right winger made 94 appearances for the Black and Whites, netting 10 goals and providing 1 assist in all competitions for the club (Transfermarkt).

The former Georgian international collected 52 caps and scored 17 goals for his country. He also played for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Dinamo Tbilisi (Transfermarkt).

Ketsbaia is currently in charge of Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta and his contract is set to expire at the end of next season. The 59-year-old has also managed the Georgian national team, Olympiacos and former club AEK Athens in the past (Transfermarkt).

Unsurprisingly the club’s tweet resulted in loads of replies from the Toon Army, with one fan praising the “brilliant player.” Additionally, Newcastle Fans TV even called him a nutcase, while another supporter described his celebration as “crazy.”
