Newcastle United: George Caulkin discusses Rafael Benitez

In recent comments made on Twitter, George Caulkin discussed the future of Rafael Benitez amid links to the Newcastle United job.

Following his departure from Chinese Super League side Dalian Professional earlier this week, some reports have speculated that Benitez could make a spectacular return to the club he left at the end of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

In reaction, The Athletic’s Newcastle correspondent, George Caulkin, took to Twitter, claiming that, at present, the 60-year-old has ‘nothing lined up’ in terms of a new job.

However, the journalist went on to relay a quote from an interview Benitez gave to The Athletic towards the end of last year, in which the Spaniard claimed that he was “keeping an eye on Europe and the Premier League and for sure, that will be my priority”.

Furthermore, Caulkin also stated his belief that he doesn’t expect Benitez to be ‘out of work for long’ as ‘he hates not working’.

Transfer Tavern Take

While it would appear, according to Caulkin, that Benitez will likely take up a position somewhere in the not so distant future, this is not guaranteed to be at Newcastle, as The Northern Echo claim that Benitez would only return to the club should their failed takeover attempt be resurrected.

This is something that, at present, does not appear to be close to happening, meaning that a potential return of the Spaniard to the North East looks to be wishful thinking, for the moment at least.
