Former chief scout at Newcastle United Graham Carr has dropped a very interesting transfer claim on James Maddison.
Speaking to The Chronicle, he claimed that ‘Newcastle were in the driving seat’ to sign the now Leicester City ace back when he was playing for Coventry City, because of previous dealings between them and the St. James’ Park faithful with regards to Adam Armstrong.

What could have been if Newcastle signed Maddison
The Tyneside club must be thinking what could have been if they managed to sign Maddison. The attacking midfield player now has a market value of £49.5m according to Transfermarkt, and has been a revelation ever since he made the step up to the Premier League from Norwich City.

The 24-year-old has scored 24 goals and made a further 16 assists in 99 games in all competitions for the Foxes over the last three consecutive terms (Transfermarkt), helping them qualify for the UEFA Europa League and currently sitting in the top four of the table.
He has also managed to break through in the senior England national team, making his one and only appearance under Gareth Southgate back in 2019 (Transfermarkt).
Nonetheless, it is a story of what could have been for the Tyneside club if they managed to sign Maddison just a few years ago.
