Newcastle United: Magpies could get triple injury boost for Wolves clash

Newcastle United could be boosted by the return to first-team action of all three of Paul Dummett, Ciaran Clark and Matty Longstaff for their meeting with Wolves on Sunday.

Steve Bruce’s side travel to Wolves looking to bounce back from their 4-1 defeat against Manchester United at St James’ Park. The Magpies had seen Karl Darlow suffer a potential injury blow after a collision with Marcus Rashford. However, it is now thought he will also feature after a scan showed no serious damage, per the Daily Mail.

Bruce gets a break

The Magpies have suffered with a lot of injury issues already at the start of the campaign. Martin Dubravka is now set to be out until December following complications with his heel injury, per The Times. However, Bruce has received more positive news this week with Dwight Gayle thought to be gearing towards a festive return to action, per Football Insider.

It has now emerged that Newcastle could also be helped by the return to action of Dummett, who has endured a problem with a tendon injury that saw him miss the second half of last season. The versatile defender’s return to action was set back by a muscle injury in a pre-season friendly against Middlesbrough, per Chronicle Live.

Meanwhile, both Clark and Longstaff have been out of action with respective ankle and thigh problems. However, all three players featured for the Magpies’ under-23s on Monday and could now be in contention to make their returns to the first-team squad on Sunday, per Chronicle Live.

Dummett and Clark returns crucial for Magpies

Newcastle have missed Longstaff’s presence in their squad, and Bruce was already looking to add to his midfield options in the loan window before missing out on both Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Magpies will therefore be boosted by his return to first-team duties. Although it is unlikely he will be an instant starter given the other options available.

What Newcastle have been in need of is extra defensive depth, with Jamaal Lascelles having also suffered injury troubles. Bruce’s squad had been looking thin on the ground at the back before the international break. The returns of the reliable Dummett, who has been labelled as ‘magnificent’ by Alan Shearer in the past, and Clark are much needed for the Magpies.
