Newcastle United: Magpies fans react to club’s throwback announcement

Lots of Magpies reacted to a post from Newcastle United’s official account announcing the club will be showing the memorable 5-0 drubbing of Manchester United on YouTube this Saturday.

Kevin Keegan’s Black and Whites thrashed Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils at St James’ Park thanks to efforts from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and a sublime chip from defender Philippe Albert (BBC).

Hulking defender Peacock opened the scoring with a hopeful header that United’s goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel inexplicably failed to stop, sending Tyneside into scenes of wild celebration. Ginola quickly followed, spinning Gary Neville inside out and striking a ferocious shot into the top corner.

Local hero Shearer scored and created two assists on that day, teeing up Ferdinand for a towering header, before latching onto his fellow striker’s rebound and putting the game far beyond United.

However, it was the centre-back who provided one of the most “amazing” goals in Premier League history, taking a pass from Robert Lee and nonchalantly lifting the ball over a helpless Schmeichel (TheSetPieces).

Make sure to check out the footage for yourselves this weekend.

Unsurprisingly a whole host of the Toon Army responded to the club’s announcement and some fans shared their memories online. One Geordie simply stated the result was “outstanding.”

However, another fan noted it is “criminal that team didn’t win the league.” Keegan shocked many supporters by suddenly leaving, and his former side went on to finish second, behind Ferguson’s United, in what is widely regarded as the end of The Entertainers era (TheSetPieces).

Have a read through the reactions down below…
