Newcastle United: Magpies receive major boost as Karl Darlow avoids serious injury

Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow has survived an injury scare and is set to return to action for the Magpies against Wolves on Sunday.

Darlow suffered a knock during the Magpies’ 4-1 defeat against Manchester United. That had raised doubts over whether he would be fit enough to feature for Steve Bruce’s side this weekend. The keeper was sent for a scan to determine the extent of his injury, after a clash with Marcus Rashford.

Scan reveals no serious issues

It is understood that Darlow received positive news from the scan which showed there was no serious damage despite there being some bruising. That means he will be able to maintain his place in the starting line-up ahead of backup keeper Mark Gillespie, who had been on standby, as per the Daily Mail.

Bruce’s side have already suffered injury issues in the goalkeeping department with Martin Dubravka now ruled out until December with a heel injury. That came after the keeper suffered a setback with his recovery from surgery taking longer than was first anticipated, as per The Times.

In Dubravka’s absence Darlow has been kept busy by the Magpies, with Newcastle conceding 86 shots at their goal in their opening five matches – more than any other side. The former Nottingham Forest man though has produced a number of crucial interventions to help the Magpies pick up points.

Newcastle now reliant on Darlow

So far this season Darlow has made the most saves in the league with 28, five more than any other keeper in the division, as per Premierleague.com. The keeper was forced into action on eight occasions against Manchester United, including keeping out Bruno Fernandes’ penalty, as per Sofascore.

His form has earned him praise throughout the opening weeks of the campaign. While the keeper was also once labelled as a ‘great goalkeeper’ by Real Madrid star Eden Hazard when the Belgian was at Chelsea. Bruce should be mightily relieved to have him fit, but equally concerned that he is being kept so busy by the Magpies’ defence.
