Newcastle United: Dan Ashworth interested in Alphonso Davies

Newcastle United: Dan Ashworth interested in Alphonso Davies - Newcastle United News

Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth is reportedly interested in an ambitious summer move for Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies.

The Lowdown: Left-back problems

Newcastle have not really had a problem at left-back this term, with Dan Burn part of a backline who have conceded the fewest goals by far (13) in the Premier League this season.

However, he is a central defender by trade, and offers little attacking threat compared to his positional peers in Europe.

Thus, with both Matt Targett and Jamal Lewis seemingly not fancied by Eddie Howe, the club could look to sign a new attacking left-back this summer, in order to help take them to the next level.

The Latest: Davies interest

Writing in his latest column for CaughtOffside, CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs says that Davies has ‘peaked’ Ashworth’s ‘interest’ ahead of this summer, with Howe valuing a ‘young, speedy and dynamic’ player at left-back:

“I also think Newcastle would prefer, as priority, a left-back. Eddie Howe values a young, speedy and dynamic kind of player in that position. The modern full-back can almost be confused with a winger at times. That’s why a profile like Bayern’s Alphonso Davies has peaked sporting director Dan Ashworth’s interest.”

The Verdict: Too ambitious?

Going for Davies, who is a regular for the Bayern team and has won the UEFA Champions League with them among other major titles, would be a bold and ambitious move from Ashworth, should he look to act upon his interest.

Once hailed as ‘unbelievable‘ by team-mate Joshua Kimmich after a moment of magic that broke the internet in 2020, Davies has built up a reputation of being one of the best left-backs of his generation, ranking in the top 11% of all full-backs for a number of key metrics in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year.

At just 22 years of age, the sky is the limit for the Canada international, and so it would be a big coop if the Magpies were somehow able to sign him this summer.
