Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has been left blown away by some news on Newcastle United striker target Goncalo Ramos.

The Lowdown: Release clause emerges

It was reported earlier this week that the St. James' Park outfit are plotting a bid for Ramos, who Benfica were said to value at above €30m (£25.4m). Fabrizio Romano even revealed the player is PIF's new 'top target' and talks to sign him are 'ongoing'.

However, it is now thought that Benfica actually included a €120m (£100m) release clause in his contract after he signed a new deal with them, showing how highly they rate the 21-year-old.

The Latest: Kenny wowed

Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny, 44, was left wowed by the news of Ramos' release clause, adding that he is clearly a player with big 'potential':

“£100million, wow. It’s all about potential with Newcastle.

“They had a great start and we know they are gradually going to improve this squad over the next couple of windows.

“Yet again, it’s someone with potential. Until you stick him in the Premier League we don’t know, do we?

“It’s that guessing game. If he can come in and learn from Callum Wilson, that is a good thing. I like the way Newcastle are going.

“I’m excited to see how they do this season and who else comes in.”

The Verdict: Future star

At just 21 years of age, there is no doubt that Ramos is going to be a future star.

He has started the season off in electrifying fashion, scoring a hat-trick in Benfica’s 4-1 home win against FC Midtjylland in their UEFA Champions League qualifier, while he has also made three assists already this term (Transfermarkt).

This comes off the back of a breakthrough campaign for the Portuguese last year, as he managed eight goals and four assists in 46 matches in total across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, if the Magpies can snap him up for around £25m, it could turn out to be a real bargain looking at his lofty release clause.
