Paddy Kenny has given his reaction to some Newcastle United news which has emerged regarding Jonjo Shelvey.
The Lowdown: New deal for Shelvey?
As per The Daily Telegraph, the 30-year-old is in line for a new deal at St James’ Park after impressing under Eddie Howe.
He has not missed a game for the former Bournemouth manager when he has been fit, scoring two goals so far, and he has recently captained the team under the 44-year-old’s management (Transfermarkt).
Nonetheless, talks of a new contract do not seem to be a surprise given his recent form.
Should Newcastle start Shelvey?
The Latest: Kenny reacts
Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League goalkeeper Kenny has given his reaction to the news, with the 43-year-old claiming that it is a ‘no brainer’ to give Shelvey a new deal. The ex-Sheffield United stopper said:
“He’s Newcastle through and through, you need those players around.
“You can’t just ship out all the players who have been there for years. It has to be a gradual thing.
“I like Shelvey, he always scores wonder goals. He is a brilliant player for me and he’s been a great servant for them.
“Even if he isn’t playing every game next year, it’s a long old season.
“You need options and Shelvey is the kind of player who can change the game if you give him the chance.
“It’s a no brainer for me, to give him a contract. He’s been brilliant since Howe came in.”
The Verdict: Deserved
Given his form, there is no doubt that Shelvey deserves a new contract.
Aside from his goals, he ranks highly among his team-mates in terms of average shots, crosses, long balls and passes at a high success rate per league game so far this season (WhoScored); and at 30 years of age, he is one of the more experienced heads in the dressing room.
Nonetheless, with an influx of new signings likely to come in given the kind of money that the new owners possess, Shelvey could be vital in helping them to settle in and setting an example of what it takes to play for the Toon Army.
