Danny Mills has been left lauding Newcastle United after they announced the signing of Joe Willock on a permanent deal last week.
The Lowdown: Willock signs
The North East club confirmed the signing of Willock permanently from Arsenal last week following a very successful loan spell with them in the 2020/21 term.
Should Newcastle have signed Willock?
Unfortunately, he was not registered in time to take any part in their 4-2 opening day defeat to West Ham United at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon, but should be able to play in their next game.
The Latest: Mills lauds Willock signing
Speaking to Football Insider, Mills, who is now a pundit after playing as a defender for the likes of Leeds United and Manchester City, has lauded the signing of Willock, and even went as far as to suggest that the Toon Army may get off Steve Bruce’s back because of it:
“He played very, very well last season and showed how good he is.
“He obviously wants to be there which is another huge bonus for the football club. He wants to be there and wants to play. He’s proven that he can do it in the Premier League.
“You just think ‘Why not? Get it done’. It’s a shame they didn’t get it done earlier.
“Obviously he adds another attacking threat. When he comes back in Newcastle fans, there will always be conjecture about Steve Bruce, but long-term he’ll be absolutely fine again.”
The Verdict: Great signing
It was clear for all to see that Willock made such a difference to the team when he played, scoring no fewer than eight goals in 14 matches in the Premier League last season from the centre of midfield (Transfermarkt).
If Bruce can keep him fit and firing, along with the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson, then the North East club will pose a real threat going forward, which should see them finish comfortably around mid-table once more.
Perhaps with a couple of more additions to the squad they can really start thinking about trying to finish in the top half, but no concrete news about next signings has emerged just yet.
