Newcastle United have already opened a channel of communication with Juventus as they explore the possibility of signing Adrien Rabiot, according to Calciomercato.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder has started seven of Juventus’ first 11 Serie A matches this season. He has averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.1 shots and 1.1 dribbles per game up to this point (via WhoScored).
He isn’t the only Juventus player with whom the Magpies have been linked since their takeover, either. Tuttosport have reported (via Sport Witness) that the club’s owners are also ‘ready’ to splash the cash on his midfield team-mate Aaron Ramsey.
According to Calciomercato, Rabiot’s ‘attitude’ has apparently caused ‘exasperation’ among Juventus supporters and manager Max Allegri has seen enough, granting permission for the Frenchman to leave the club during the January transfer window.
Juventus will not only ‘evaluate’ offers, they will ‘look for them’, and Newcastle could be a willing suitor, with initial discussions having already been held.
Newcastle should probably steer clear of this one, not because of Rabiot’s ability but because of his temperament.
The concerns cited in Calciomercato’s report date back to his time at Paris Saint-Germain, when he was denounced by the club’s sporting director Antero Henrique for an ‘unacceptable’ lack of professionalism (via The Guardian).
For £175,000 per week in addition to a considerable transfer fee (no Magpies player currently earns more than £100,000 weekly), it’s hard to argue that this is a gamble worth taking.
