Newcastle United have made an offer to sign Everton winger Anthony Gordon, according to a report from Football Insider

The lowdown: Breakout season

Having been nurtured through the ranks on Merseyside, Gordon directly contributed to 34 goals in 58 appearances for the youth sides and spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Preston before returning to Goodison Park.

Despite spending much of the early part of last season on the periphery, the 21-year-old England youth international came to the fore as Everton battled relegation and has quickly become a sought-after commodity amidst recent interest from Tottenham.

Now it appears as though the Magpies are eyeing Gordon as part of their own project under Eddie Howe...

The latest: 'Top talent'

As per Football Insider, Newcastle are believed to have 'submitted a £35million bid' to bring the four-cap England Under 21 sensation to the North East this summer.

It's claimed that a 'Newcastle source' has informed the outlet of the offer after the Toon club identified the Liverpool-born youngster as a 'top talent' with supreme potential.

The report also states that Everton are 'mulling over their response' to the bid for the tireless Gordon who was hailed by journalist Ryan Taylor for an 'exceptional' display against Liverpool in April when playing as if 'his life depends on it' at Anfield.

The verdict: Break the bank

Albeit only a small sample size at the elite level on which to base a judgment, in the face of adversity last season, the gifted starlet was impressive, scoring four times and registering three assists in 40 appearances across all competitions in a struggling side.

Overall, Gordon was a talisman for Everton and earned a 6.89 Sofascore average match rating whilst winning 4.9 duels, successfully completing 1.1 dribbles and making 1.0 key pass on average per Premier League outing - showcasing an impressive battling spirit as well as the direct running qualities that caught the eye initially.

Equally adept on either wing, the pacey Englishman was a standout performer last term and could be a superb addition to Howe's options at St James' Park, acting as the perfect foil for the likes of fellow dribbling supremo Allan Saint-Maximin.

As such, Newcastle transfer chief Dan Ashworth and indeed PIF should be going all out to get this statement signing over the line before the 2022/23 campaign commences, even if it means shattering the existing record £39.6million expenditure that saw Joelinton head to the Toon.
