Newcastle United: Magpies plotting move to secure future of Dwight Gayle

Newcastle United: Magpies plotting move to secure future of Dwight Gayle - Newcastle United News

Newcastle United are planning to open talks with Dwight Gayle over a potential new deal to keep him at St James’ Park beyond the January and summer transfer windows.

Gayle has suffered multiple issues with injuries over the last few seasons which has prevented him from making a larger contribution. The forward has also seen his start to the current campaign halted by a knee injury he suffered during a pre-season friendly against Crewe Alexandra.

Bruce needs to maintain attacking depth

Newcastle have been without a natural goalscorer to challenge Callum Wilson for his place in the side during the opening weeks of the campaign. However, Gayle is now set to return from his knee injury ahead of the festive schedule in December, per Football Insider.

Who was the last club Rafa managed before Newcastle?

The 30-year-old’s return would be timely for Bruce’s side, who face seven tough fixtures in the final month of the year. Gayle would return with a point to prove, having only managed to make 20 Premier League appearances last term, in which he registered four goals and averaged 0.9 shots per game, (Sofascore).

However, the striker is entering the final year of his current deal worth around £40,000 per week (Spotrac), so the Magpies could risk losing him for free in the summer or even in January. Newcastle are now planning to open talks with the forward over a potential new deal to ensure he remains at the club, per Football Insider.

Gayle facing tough decision over future

Newcastle’s need for Gayle has been apparent so far this term, with the Magpies having been heavily reliant on Wilson, who has netted four of their seven league goals. However, despite Bruce having labelled him as ‘invaluable,’ the 30-year-old is still behind the ex-Bournemouth man in the pecking order.

Gayle would be unlikely to have many suitors in the Premier League, but he would likely be sought-after by Championship clubs. He registered 23 goals in the Magpies’ promotion season in 2016/17, before hitting 24 on loan at West Brom in 2018/19 (Sofascore). He could get regular minutes in the English second tier if he decides to prioritise first team football over a battle for his place at Newcastle.
