Finance expert Kieran Maguire has dropped a definitive one-word claim on whether he thinks Newcastle United will look for a new manager in the near future.
Speaking to Football Insider, he was asked if fans of the St. James’ Park faithful are likely to see a change in manager in the near future based on financial performance, to which he said ‘no’ and also gave his analysis as to why:
“While Mike Ashley is still there, no. Because, to a certain extent, Steve Bruce is taking the heat off the owner himself.
“If you look at spending, Newcastle have probably punched above their weight in the three seasons they’ve had in the Premier League.
“In terms of points earned compared to the wages that they pay, they are doing well.
“Steve Bruce isn’t 100% responsible for the signings they make either. Joelinton has been poor, Almiron isn’t first-choice as he originally was. Those are the two big signings. Then they got Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson.
“If Newcastle finish between 13th and 17th that’s fine as far as Ashley is concerned.”
Should Bruce be sacked?
While Maguire thinks that Bruce will keep his job at the Tyneside club due to financial reasons, that does not mean that he is not under pressure to pick up some better results.
Should Bruce keep the Newcastle job?
The Magpies currently sit in 15th spot in the table in the top flight having picked up a mere 19 points from their opening 18 games, just seven ahead of the relegation zone having recorded four losses and two draws in their last six matches (Sky Sports).
If that sort of form continues, then the Toon could find themselves in real danger of being involved in a relegation battle.
While sacking Bruce may not make a lot of sense to Ashley financially, the chief executive of Sports Direct will surely be starting to worry about being dragged into the drop zone.
