Newcastle United: Eddie Howe gives green light for Matt Ritchie to leave -Newcastle United News

Eddie Howe has reportedly given the green light for Matt Ritchie to leave Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Out of favour

Ritchie picked up a calf problem which has ruled him out since October, but before then he was not getting many minutes on the pitch.

He has only played one minute of football in the Premier League so far this season, and made two appearances in total (Transfermarkt), suggesting that he has fallen out of favour under Howe.

The Latest: Howe allows exit

As per Football Insider, Howe has personally given the green light for Ritchie to go in January, and the St. James’ Park outfit will listen to offers for him.

They will let him leave for a cut-price, given that his contract in the North East expires in the summer.

The Verdict: Time to go

Ritchie has been a great servant on Tyneside, racking up a total of 190 appearances for the Magpies, including 42 in the Championship in the 2016/17 season, where he scored eight goals and made 12 assists on the way to helping them win promotion back up to the Premier League (Transfermarkt).

He has also played 151 times under Howe, mainly at Bournemouth rather than the Toon, and again helped the former up the divisions from League One up to the Premier League.

Howe dubbed Ritchie as ‘incredible‘ after there were whispers that he could leave in the summer, and with January coming up, and his current contract situation, now is the best time for them to part ways as the 33-year-old looks to seek more regular game time.
