Speaking to Football Insider, former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson has spoke out in praise of the potentially imminent signing of Ademola Lookman from RB Leipzig – citing the fact he could be a ‘good addition’ who could temporarily fill the void left by injured star player Allan Saint-Maximin.
A scout report from the Chronicle has also suggested that the winger is ‘difficult to contain’ and offers a similar style of play to the Frenchman, utilising his pace and trickery down the flank to cause problems. Comparing the two midfielders, Saint-Maximin has averaged a superior successful dribbles per game ratio over Lookman, even during the latter man’s best season to date. Meanwhile it appears the Englishman has the potential to do more damage in terms of goalscoring and assists judging by his 2017/2018 campaign (WhoScored.com).
However, despite Lookman’s seemingly inferior take-ons, Robinson has insisted that he could be a worthy stand-in for the injured Saint-Maximin – talking at length about the winger.
“I think Lookman will be a good addition. You don’t know what budget they’ve got to spend, he was at Everton, he knows the league so it could be a good move for him,” claimed Robinson to Football Insider.
“He’ll be a key addition because I think they’ve missed Saint-Maximin, I think they’ve really missed him.
“He was just finding his form, he was becoming a real threat. He’s key because he carries the attacking threat.”
Whether or not Lookman comes close to filling Saint-Maximin’s shoes remains to be seen, but if Football Insider are to be believed, Newcastle are closing in on his signature with an imminent medical.
