Newcastle United’s campaign has been one of sharp contrasts.
Eddie Howe’s side have impressed on the European stage, doing enough to reach the Champions League play-offs, yet consistency has been far harder to come by domestically. Sitting 10th after 24 Premier League matches, injuries and attacking disruption have taken their toll.
The loss of Alexander Isak in the summer has been particularly damaging.
While Nick Woltemade has contributed in his own way and Yoane Wissa has only recently returned to fitness, the goals haven’t flowed as they did last season — with former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran recently touted as a potential last-minute solution to the problem.
Against that backdrop, the idea of losing another cornerstone of the squad before the transfer deadline would have been catastrophic.
That was the fear after rumours surfaced suggesting a shock late move for one of Newcastle’s most important players — claims the club have now firmly shut down.
Tonali to Stay at Newcastle
Newcastle United have categorically dismissed reports claiming Arsenal are preparing a last-ditch move for midfielder Sandro Tonali.
The speculation, which emerged from Germany, suggested the Gunners were exploring a surprise deadline-day approach for the Italy international. However, Telegraph Sport has since contacted senior figures at St James’ Park, who reacted with disbelief.
The response from inside the club was unequivocal — the story was labelled “complete rubbish,” with one source questioning how such claims had gained traction at all.
Even on a practical level, the rumours never added up. Tonali would command a fee well in excess of £80 million, and with no time to source a replacement, Newcastle have no intention of entertaining offers — regardless of the buying club.
While such stories rarely appear without someone, somewhere, fuelling them, Newcastle have moved quickly to extinguish the noise. Tonali remains central to Eddie Howe’s plans and is not for sale.
Described by Howe as “magnificent in every way,” the Italian midfielder has become a key figure both on and off the pitch. With European football still in play and the Premier League season far from over, Newcastle view his presence as non-negotiable.
