Newcastle United slap £22m price tag on Arsenal target

Yohan Cabaye

With Christmas all wrapped up, attention has already shifted to the winter transfer window which opens in less than six days.

Given the tightest title race in years, we are expecting quite a few new major arrivals at the top of the Premier League.

Now Neil Ashton from the Daily Mail has reported that Arsenal will have to pay £22 million to land Newcastle United’s Yohan Cabaye as they prepare to revive their interest in the French international midfielder in January.

It is thought that Wenger still wants to add more creativity in Arsenal’s midfielder during January and Ashton reveals that they are interested in rivalling PSG for the 27-year-old.

Cabaye has turned things round at St. James’ Park, putting in some highly impressive performances for Alan Pardew’s side, since being strongly linked with a £10 million move to the Emirates Stadium in the summer. However that won’t have changed his opinion about potentially playing under Wenger at Ashburton Grove.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is reluctant to lose one of his key players at this stage of the season and reportedly told the Gunners that he will cost them a staggering £22 million to sign for former Lille man.

Pardew said recently that he thinks he can keep him at the club and prove Newcastle’s ambition.

Pardew said: “I don’t fear losing Yohan. What I know is that he is a fantastic footballer, and I think he’s improving.

“He’s in an environment where he has got pole position in my team. That’s nice for a player like him. You don’t always get that. You can get lost at other clubs.”

At 27, we feel that price is too high for Cabaye but with Wenger keen to strengthen, it could prove another transfer tussle in January.
