Newcastle United snubbed by 23-year-old though it may prove a blessing in disguise

There are contrasting emotions among Everton and Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern following this weekend’s return of the Premier League.

Toffees supporters saw their side comfortably beaten 3-0 by Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham at Goodison Park, yet Magpies fans were in high spirits after the North East giants picked up their second successive league win with a 1-0 success at Swansea City on Sunday.

However, supporters from both clubs may well be drowning their sorrows in the bar following a recent report from The Sun on Sunday (via HITC), which details that the two sides failed in summer pursuits of Tottenham forward Vincent Janssen.

The 23-year-old made the move to North London last summer after impressing for Dutch side AZ, yet he’s found the going much tougher in English football with just two Premier League goals in 28 appearances for Pochettino’s side.

Thus, his future at Tottenham always looked to be in doubt during the summer transfer window – he eventually sealed a loan move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce – yet recent reports suggest that Everton and Newcastle expressed an interest in the Dutch international, only for him to reportedly reject both offers.

And that is sure to frustrate our resident Magpies and Toffees supporters, what with Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle struggling to add to their attacking ranks over the summer, while Ronald Koeman’s Everton saw star striker Romelu Lukaku leave for Manchester United, and thus leave them slightly short in the striking department.

Landlord’s verdict: Things just didn’t work out for Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen last season, with the Dutch international failing to replicate his AZ form in the Premier League.

Spurs fans wanted him to succeed (his goal in the 4-0 win over Bournemouth back in March produced the loudest cheer of the afternoon), but it would have undoubtedly been a huge risk from manager Mauricio Pochettino to go into the new season with Janssen as his second choice forward.

However, the opportunity was there for the 23-year-old to remain in England, with him reportedly turning down Everton and Newcastle United, with it plausible that he wanted a move abroad to reignite his career ahead of a possible return to Tottenham, as opposed to remaining in the limelight in the Premier League.
