Newcastle United are reportedly in pole position to sign Kyle Joseph once the summer transfer window opens.

The Lowdown: Newcastle eye Joseph

The North East club have been reported to be lining up a move to bring Joseph to St. James' Park, with his current contract at Wigan Athletic set to expire at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Celtic have also shown interest in signing him, but Mark Douglas has given an update on the Tyneside club's pursuit.

The Latest: Newcastle in pole position

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Douglas has claimed that the Magpies are currently in pole position in the race to sign Joseph once the market opens.

Sheffield United are also looking at the possibility of signing him, but the Toon have been tipped to complete the transfer.

The football journalist adds that Joseph 'ticks boxes' and would be 'one to watch' if he signed for NUFC.

The Verdict: Joseph one for the future

Joseph is certainly a player who can grow and develop into a fine striker in the future, especially if he is learning from Callum Wilson.

He scored a respectable five goals and supplied a further assist in 18 matches in total in the EFL League One as a teenager (Transfermarkt), and given that he is till only 19 years of age, he will surely only get better and better.

Latics journalist Paul Kendrick dubbed Joseph as a ‘shining light’ after a man-of-the-match performance back in November, and so he should be someone that Newcastle should be going all in for, especially if they can land him on the cheap.
