Newcastle United legend Malcom Macdonald has suggested that Allan Saint-Maximin could put himself in the shop window with an impressive performance in their upcoming clash against Manchester United.
Steve Bruce’s side are set to host the Red Devils in their first game back after the international break next Saturday, when they will hope to repeat their 3-1 win against Burnley. In that match, Saint-Maximin stole the show with a superb individual performance, completing four dribbles and making three key passes as well as registering a goal and an assist (via Sofascore).
Macdonald on Saint-Maximin’s potential to reignite transfer interest
Saint-Maximin attracted the interest of Manchester United prior to his move from Nice to Newcastle in the summer of 2019. Since then, the 23-year-old has demonstrated his ability to adapt to the Premier League, scoring four goals and registering six assists in 29 top-flight appearances, as per TransferMarkt.
The forward has recently suggested in an interview with Sport.fr, that playing for a team with Champions League football like Manchester United could make it easier for him to make the French senior squad, whilst he also outlined that he has ambitions to play in Europe’s top club competition over the next few years.
Speaking to Chronicle Live, Macdonald urged the Magpies to aspire to match the 23-year-old’s ambitions. He also suggested that, were Saint-Maximin to perform to a high standard against Manchester United next time out, it could reignite the Red Devils’ interest.
The 70-year-old said: “My old club have to guard against two things. The first is that they don’t sicken Allan Saint-Maximin through lack of quality support and lose him to one of his many admirers who will grow by the week. And the second is that they don’t become a one-man team.
“That’s how good the mesmerising Frenchman is. Of course, clubs are now on red alert with all the accolades he has received. Including Manchester United, Newcastle’s next opponents. If he rips them to pieces they will be back!”
Back up plan needed if Saint-Maximin out grows Magpies
So far this season, Saint-Maximin is showing signs that he could swiftly outgrow the level that the Magpies have occupied in recent years. The winger has already averaged 0.7 shots, one big chance created and 2.3 successful dribbles per game this season (via Sofascore), which if improved upon could make him amongst the most productive wide players in the Premier League.
That form is bound to attract the attention of clubs like Manchester United, as Macdonald suggests. Therefore, Newcastle must have a backup plan in place in case they lose the 23-year-old, and there is some promise that their transfer policy is improving with their plentiful summer business. Replacing Saint-Maximin would not be easy, but it is an issue they could face if his star continues to ascend.
