Newcastle United are among several clubs who have either enquired about or made contact with French team Rennes over the possibility of signing Georginio Rutter in the summer transfer window.
According to L’Equipe (via Get French Football News), Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal as well as Serie A giants AC Milan have also enquired about the availability of the 18-year-old. Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have all made contact in an attempt to try and sign the teenager, who has just one year left on his current deal in France.
However, Rutter is apparently remaining coy over the widespread interest in getting his signature over the dotted line, as he wants to know whether he will get game-time with Rennes this season if he is to consider signing an extension to his current contract.
Will Newcastle stay up with their current squad?
On the other hand, he is allegedly not guaranteed a place in their starting XI and so may seek a move away to one of the big European clubs interested in his services in order to aid his development as a footballer.
St James’ Park may well be an ideal destination for Rutter, who can learn from the likes of new signing Callum Wilson if he makes the move to the northeast.
The striker played in four games for Rennes’ under-19 team in the UEFA Youth League in 2019/20, scoring one goal, as per Transfermarkt.
At just 18 years of age, Rutter still has a lot of time to grow and develop as a player; and under the guidance of Steve Bruce, he may well turn out to be a good addition for the Magpies if they can fend off the vast competition for his signature.
