Newcastle United have beaten bitter rivals Sunderland, Burnley and Crystal Palace to the signing of Liverpool ace Niall Brookwell, according to the Sunderland Echo.
As per the outlet, the 19-year old sprung to the attention of now Rangers boss Steven Gerrard when he was associated with the academy, and has now signed a deal worth two years to join up with the Under 23’s squad at St. James’ Park.
Ged McNamee, who is the academy recruitment chief at the Black Cats, was keen to bring Brookwell to the Stadium of Light as the club had made him one of their main transfer targets in the upcoming window.
Indeed, the midfield player was handed his debut for the Under 18’s under Gerrard at just 15 years of age, and has since gone on to play at various youth levels for the Anfield outfit, scoring four goals and making three assists in 21 games in all competitions across the past three seasons, (via Transfermarkt).
Brookwell will now play for the Under 23’s at the Magpies under Chris Hogg, where he will surely be looking to further his career and perhaps even break into the first team under Steve Bruce.
It could well be exciting times ahead for the Tyneside club, who could be welcoming a proposed takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) group looking to dethrone Mike Ashley.
Will the Premier League approve the takeover of Newcastle?
Only time will tell as to whether the signing of Brookwell will be a success, but the fact that midfield legend Gerrard put his faith in him may be a good sign of things to come.
Geordies, will Brookwell be a good signing? Comment below!
