Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce confirmed that the Magpies will seal a move for Deportivo Municipal’s Rodrigo Vilca before the transfer window closes and revealed where he sees the 21-year-old fitting into his squad.
The Magpies have already agreed a deal with Deportivo Municipal for Vilca, who is preparing to travel to England to complete his move to Newcastle, as per a tweet from Peruvian journalist Diego Montalvan. It would see the 21-year-old become Newcastle’s sixth signing of the transfer window after Jeff Hendrick, Ryan Fraser, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and Mark Gillespie.
Vilca is a player who is highly-rated in Peru and he has already earned a call-up to their national team, demonstrating his potential during his time with Deportivo Municipal by registering four goals and three assists in 29 appearances (via Transfermarkt).
However, it is could be unlikely that he is ready to come straight into Newcastle’s first team squad and whether he has the physicality needed to adapt quickly to the English top flight. That could mean the 21-year-old potentially needs to bide his time to impress Bruce and force his way into the squad.
Speaking to Chronicle Live after Newcastle’s 3-1 win against Burnley on Saturday, Bruce confirmed that the Magpies are set to confirm the arrival of Vilca soon and revealed that he will go into the development squad initially to work on his talent and demonstrate his qualities.
The manager said: “The young Peruvian player, we hope, will be arriving. He’ll be for the Academy to start with, that’s for sure, so he’s not really going to be involved with the first team.”
It makes sense to place Vilca into the club’s development squad initially, considering that he would unlikely be a player who would come straight into the first XI, and it will be up to the Magpies’ coaches at development squad level to improve his physicality and get him ready to make an impact in the Premier League.
This seems like another positive addition for Newcastle, who have enjoyed a productive transfer window. Vilca’s imminent arrival shows that the club are not just thinking about the here and now but are also considering how they can improve moving forwards over the next few years.
