Nick Hammond and Newcastle United are reportedly now the 'most likely' to sign Aaron Ramsey in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Midfielder wanted

Given that the St. James' Park faithful have been linked with moves for the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Lucas Paqueta and Brennan Johnson in recent days, it is clear that they now want to sign an attacking midfield player with the money that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium will no doubt be looking to splash.

Hammond, who has been appointed by the North East club, will be tasked with signing players next month as their new short-term transfer consultant, and he needs to get the recruitment spot on if they are to have the best possible chance of avoiding relegation from the Premier League down to the Championship come the end of the season.

The Latest: Newcastle 'most likely' for Ramsey

As per Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), the Tyneside outfit are now the 'most likely' to sign Ramsey in January, and he is an 'ideal target' for them.

His 'high' wages may be an issue, but Juventus are desperate to get rid of him so that they are off of their books.

The Verdict: Smart move

Given his previous pedigree in the top flight with Arsenal, Ramsey could well be a smart buy for the Magpies.

Described as a ‘world-class’ player by Wales international teammate Joe Allen, the 30-year-old is certainly still capable of playing at the highest level, and he is someone that would fit right into Eddie Howe's system.

Ian Rush claims that Howe ‘would love’ Ramsey in his team, and that he would ‘fit his style down to a tee’ (The Chronicle), suggesting that he can slot right into the middle of the park with few worries.

Nonetheless, with experience on his side and a chance to return to the Premier League, Ramsey may well be up for the relegation fight - he has already proved he loves an underdog fight, helping to carry Wales to the semi-finals at Euro 2016.
