Newcastle United: Magpies ahead in Jonathan David talks

Newcastle United are reportedly now ahead in talks to sign Jonathan David in the summer.
The Lowdown: David excelling at Lille
After showing promise at Gent, the Canada international is now excelling on the big stage at Lille.
His 13 goals and three assists in Ligue 1 last season massively helped in them winning the title over Paris Saint-Germain, and this term he is on course to better that goal return, with 12 in the division so far.
His performances have earned high praise from commentator Maximiliano Bretos, who described him as ‘phenomenal‘, and there is no doubt that the 22-year-old will be a man in demand come the summer transfer window.
The Latest: Newcastle ahead in David transfer race
As per Calciomercato, Newcastle are now ahead in terms of talks for David’s signature, along with both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.
Should Newcastle sign David?
Yes

No

Both Milan clubs have also made a move, but they have been warned that he will cost no less than €60m (£50.4m) plus bonuses.
The Italian outlet are highly fond of the Canada international, labelling him as a ‘jewel’ and a ‘great talent’, adding that his agent’s phone rings ‘insistently’ from the ‘best clubs in the world’ over his client.
The Verdict: Unlikely
Even if Newcastle manage to stay in the Premier League for next season, a move to Tyneside for David seems highly unlikely.
There will no doubt be better-placed clubs fighting over his services with whom the Magpies will unlikely be able to compete at this stage of their project.
Likened to none other than Liverpool and world superstar Mo Salah in terms of his ability to score from different areas of the pitch, David is destined to become one of the best attackers in the game at just 22 years of age, and the summer just seems too soon for him to get a move to St James’ Park.
