Newcastle United: Magpies moving for Mitchel Bakker -Newcastle United Transfer Rumours

Craig Hope has revealed that Newcastle United are now moving to sign Mitchel Bakker in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Busy week ahead

Following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood from Atletico Madrid and Burnley respectively, it feels as if the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium’s business is not done yet.

The Magpies have been strongly linked with a move for central defender Diego Carlos, while Aston Villa ace Matt Targett has emerged as a left-back target.

Nonetheless, it seems as if the defence is the next area of the pitch to strengthen.

The Latest: Bakker movement

As per the Daily Mail’s Hope, there could now be some movement from Newcastle in their pursuit of Bakker, and Bayer Leverkusen are willing to sell if they can meet their asking price. The journalist revealed:

“Mitchel Bakker to NUFC is one we could see movement on. Hearing Leverkusen want £16m & are prepared to sell. They’re already sourcing replacements for the Dutch left-back.”

The Verdict: Sign

Left-back is certainly a position where Newcastle could do with an upgrade, and Bakker would provide just that. Described as a player with ‘power and determination‘ by Leverkusen manager Gerardo Seoane, he would be perfect for the relegation battle ahead.

Should Newcastle sign Bakker?

His one goal and three assists in the Bundesliga so far this season tops Jamal Lewis, Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett in the Premier League, and he is also averaging more clearances, dribbles, and passes at a higher success than the Magpies trio (WhoScored).

At just 21 years of age, Bakker has already won seven trophies in his senior career, and his winning mentality would certainly be useful in the dressing room as Newcastle look to stay in the top flight.
