Newcastle United have been given a boost in their pursuit of William Saliba in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Saliba wanted

As per the Daily Mail, the St. James' Park faithful want to take the Arsenal central defender on loan for the new season, as he awaits a decision from Mikel Arteta on what his plans are for him.

Due to the financial impact of the global pandemic, it seems as if loan deals are a potentially cheaper route into the market for the North East club.

The Latest: Saliba boost

According to Football Insider, the Tyneside club have been told by the Gunners that they will let Saliba go out on loan if they can secure the signing of Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Steve Bruce's team have already registered their interest in Saliba and are also eyeing up a permanent move for Joe Willock.

However, they face competition from other sides in the Premier League, as well as some clubs in France, for Saliba's signature.

The Verdict: Sign

The Magpies will certainly need to bolster their squad if they are to improve on their last campaign, and signing Saliba is the perfect way to do that.

Former Toon stars Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy have both sung his praises in the past, with the former claiming that he 'can do very well', while the latter lauded him as a 'great player' with 'good technique' (Ligue 1 podcast).

Saliba was a regular starter in Ligue with OGC Nice while on loan there last term, and certainly showcased his talents despite being just 20 years of age, winning no fewer than 3.5 of his duels per game while also averaging four clearances and 1.3 interceptions per match (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, NUFC could do a lot worse than to sign the France U20 international on loan.
