Newcastle discuss £42m move for “unique” star

Newcastle United have not confirmed whether Callum Wilson will extend his stay on Tyneside beyond the summer, so recruiting a new striker could become a priority for the club.

The Magpies have had a season for the history books, winning their first major trophy in 70 years back in March, but if they can complete their goal of qualifying for the Champions League this season, it will be one of their most successful ever.

Newcastle are currently third in the Premier League table with just two fixtures remaining to seal their European fate, with tough fixtures away to Arsenal and at St James’ Park on the final day for their clash with Everton.

Behind the scenes, sporting director Paul Mitchell will already be preparing to identify the recruitment priorities and working on deals to bring the right players to progress the team further next season.

Fabian Schar recently signed a new 12-month deal to remain in the North East for another season, however, popular goal-scorer Wilson is yet to decide on his future beyond the current campaign.

It has been reported by SPORT BILD (via Sport Witness) that Newcastle United are in discussions to potentially sign Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface this summer.

It is claimed that a fee of €50m (£42m) is being discussed, and the Nigerian striker is looking to leave Germany this summer, alongside several of his teammates looking for a new challenge.

Will Newcastle sign Victor Boniface?

While Boniface would be a great addition to the Newcastle attacking threat next season, is it realistic to expect that the 6 foot 2 goal machine will want to play second fiddle?

Indeed, the Magpies face a more congested schedule with European fixtures added, but it is undisputed that Isak is the starting striker when he is fit and available to play.

Not only that, a £42m investment for a back-up striker seems steep, especially with the club having higher priority roles they need to fill this summer.

Over 19 Bundesliga appearances this season so far, the 24-year-old hitman – hailed “unique” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – has scored eight goals and registered two assists, averaging just 53 minutes per game under Xabi Alonso.

It would come as no surprise if Boniface wanted to go somewhere he can boost his minutes after just 12 starts at Leverkusen this season due to a mid-season hamstring injury which led to having his game time significantly reduced upon return.

Having said that, the young Nigeria international has the potential and talent to become an important player for any club, and under the guidance of Eddie Howe could become excellent competition for his Swedish striker.

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle are serious about their pursuit of Boniface, though finding any worthy striker to succeed Wilson that will also be content with being in the shadow of Isak will be a challenge in itself.
