Newcastle United have reportedly ended their pursuit of Eintracht striker Hugo Ekitike and are rapidly moving on to a goal-scorer closer to home.

The Magpies have been embroiled in a striker saga that has dominated the headlines this week, which led to an approach from Premier League champions Liverpool for Swedish sensation Alexander Isak.

As has always been the case, Newcastle have no interest in parting ways with their star forward and instead remain focused on bolstering their attacking line ahead of the new season.

Liverpool have advanced their negotiations to sign Ekitike instead, which leaves Newcastle in a situation where they either test the resolve of the Frankfurt star or move on.

A fresh report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein suggests that Newcastle are moving on very quickly and will now test Premier League peers Brentford.

Writing on social media platform X, Ornstein claims:

“Newcastle exploring move to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford after cooling Hugo Ekitike interest.

!No #NUFC / #BrentfordFC contact yet but expected soon + personal terms also need to be agreed.”

“Availability & price may depend on Mbeumo case @TheAthleticFC”

How much will Yoane Wissa cost?

It’s clear that Newcastle view the signing of another centre-forward as a top priority this summer, especially with a Champions League campaign looming.

Securing a striker who can confidently contribute goals, relieve some of the burden on Isak and strengthen the squad across all competitions – both domestically and in Europe – will be vital.

Wissa has delivered consistently for Brentford, netting 49 goals and providing 13 assists in 149 appearances.

That’s a goal contribution every 142 minutes, an impressive output that would be warmly welcomed on Tyneside.

The DR Congo international has flourished since Ivan Toney’s departure, and his partnership with Bryan Mbeumo became one of the most talked-about attacking duos in the Premier League last season.

Newcastle can benefit from having a ready-made Premier League striker in their ranks with the signing of the 29-year-old, spending a significant amount less than they would’ve on Ekitike, as the price tag reportedly stands at £50m.

All things considered, this move for Wissa is one to watch in the coming hours and days.

Newcastle appear laser-focused on securing a striker quickly, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them table an official offer for the Brentford goal machine imminently.
