Newcastle United have been on the hunt for a striker and have finally made progress in their pursuit of adding more depth to their attacking threat.

After missing out on Hugo Ekitike and João Pedro, the Magpies have been scrambling for another option to support Alexander Isak next season, and they could be about to get third time lucky.

It was revealed last week by The Athletic’s David Ornstein that the club were interested in signing Brentford star Yoane Wissa.

The trusted transfer journalist reported that Newcastle held an interest but were yet to make a formal approach.

However, that changed yesterday when the Magpies made their first attempt to sign the talented striker.

An initial bid of £25m was rejected by the Bees, however, Wissa is reported to be back in London after requesting permission to leave the pre-season training camp to continue talks for a potential move to the North East.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie revealed further details on the current negotiations between the two Premier League clubs, with an improved bid of £30m expected to be offered in the coming hours and days.

Writing on social media platform X, Downie claimed:

“Newcastle have had a bid of £25m turned down by Brentford for Yoan Wissa, but are set to make a second offer of £30m + add-ons.”

“Direct talks are taking place and the feeling is a deal should get done. Wissa has one year left on his Bees contract with a year’s option.”

“The 28-year-old is keen to play Champions League football and has informed Brentford he is open to the move. Wissa has left the Brentford training camp in Portugal for talks with club bosses.”

Will Newcastle sign Yoane Wissa?

The latest update on the situation looks promising for Newcastle, and their Champions League qualification appears to be an attractive prospect for the striker.

Wissa may be older than the preferred profile Newcastle originally targeted, but there’s no denying that he is an experienced, Premier League-proven goal-scorer who could make a major impact on Tyneside.

Over 35 Premier League appearances last season, the Congo international registered four assists and scored 19 goals, making him the sixth-highest scoring player in the entire top flight.

Bringing in a reliable goal threat in the centre-forward role to relieve some of the pressure on Alexander Isak will be absolutely imperative for the Magpies.

The club’s ambitions are clear – to establish themselves as a major force both in England and Europe, and signing players with star quality and proven experience is key to achieving that goal.

It remains to be seen whether Brentford will accept Newcastle’s improved offer, particularly after already losing Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United.

However, Wissa’s decision to leave Portugal to continue talks with club representatives makes it clear he wants the move to the North East, so it would be no surprise to see the deal go through.
