Nottingham Forest are in ‘talks’ to sign Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Freuler open to exit

The midfielder is a loyal servant of the Serie A outfit, having been at the club since 2016, but after a disappointing previous campaign, is now looking for a new challenge.

The 30-year-old has reportedly suggested that he is available for transfer this window, with the Italian giants sticking a €10m (£8.4m) valuation on his head.

Following a fresh update, the Reds have been credited with a real interest in the maestro, and it sounds as though negotiations to bring their man to the Premier League are already underway.

The Latest: Forest in talks for Freuler

Taking to Twitter, Romano confirmed that Forest are now in contact regarding a potential move. He wrote:

“Nottingham Forest are interested in Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler. Talks ongoing with Atalanta, still nothing agreed but he’s one of the targets in the list.

“Forest are also working for a new left back.”

The Verdict: Perfect for Cooper

Steve Cooper has already added Lewis O’Brien and Orel Mangala to his midfield ranks, so you would imagine that any deal done now would complete the new signings in that area.

Last season, Freuler, called a ‘very good engine’ and 'under-appreciated' by sports journalist Josh Bunting, was a defensive rock in the centre circle for Atalanta, averaging 2.4 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per Serie A game, via WhoScored.

The 46-cap international would add leadership qualities to the dressing room having previously captained Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, alongside bringing plenty of experience, and he could be one of the next fresh faces to walk through the doors at the City Ground alongside Jizz Hornkamp in weeks to come.
