Nottingham Forest: Serge Aurier facing late fitness test before Brighton clash

Nottingham Forest defender Serge Aurier is a doubt for his side’s Premier League meeting against Brighton on Tuesday night, according to injury analyst Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Forest head to Brighton

The Reds were beaten 1-0 at Wolves over the weekend in what was another disappointing result which leaves Steve Cooper’s men bottom of the top-flight table.

Forest have a swift chance to make amends for that defeat, though, as they make the trip to a Brighton side still getting over the abrupt exit of Graham Potter to Chelsea.

Aurier wasn’t involved in the matchday squad at Molineux because of injury and it remains to be seen if he will be fit to face the Seagulls on Tuesday.

The Latest: Dinnery provides Aurier injury update

Taking to Twitter, Dinner relayed from Cooper’s press conference that the Ivorian defender will require a late fitness test to determine whether he could be involved at the Amex Stadium tomorrow.

The injury analyst tweeted:

“Serge Aurier is one of those facing a late test. ‘[He] has had a bit of an accelerated programme since he came in. He played in the Leicester and Villa games. It has all happened a bit quick, and when you do that, you do tend to pick up some niggles. It’s a muscle injury.’“

The Verdict: Another chance for Neco Williams?

While Aurier’s absence would be a blow, given his experience and quality – he has been hailed as a  ‘special‘ person by Jose Mourinho and made more than 430 senior club and international appearances – it would give another opportunity to Neco Williams to prove his worth after his summer move from Liverpool.

The young Welshman is still finding his feet at the City Ground but he is an exciting, athletic talent who can arguably be stronger at the back than the much-maligned Aurier. However, a return of zero goals or assists so far this season shows here the 21-year-old could offer more in a Forest shirt.

The hope is that both players will fit for selection, of course, giving Cooper a healthy selection headache and potentially allowing him to bring one right-back on if the other is tiring.
