It’s been a relatively quiet summer for the Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern, though the recent double swoop for Javier Manquillo and Jacob Murphy have renewed optimism. 

Although the Magpies do bost Rafa Benitez at the helm, it is of some concern to our landlord that the team hasn’t seen more reinforcements added, despite the club being promoted as Championship winners.

You would think your squad wouldn’t need too much altering following that success, however, the gap between the top-flight and second-tier is ever-widening and Newcastle will struggle if they don’t get their act together in the market.

A keen Premier League goal scorer is what the Tyneside outfit desperately need to partner or battle with Dwight Gayle, according to our fans by the bar, as well as a ‘keeper to replace the likely outgoing Karl Darlow.

Experience is pivotal in this division and Benitez’s men have little of it, so that is what the manager needs to address in the summer window before it slams shut.

Here are TWO over-30 footballers that Newcastle United must secure a surprise swoop for in the not-too-distant future….

Jose Fonte

While the Portugal international struggled to wholly convince following his move to West Ham United, he’s proven to be a solid enough Premier League central defender. The former Southampton man may struggle to command a starting berth in east London next season, so perhaps a move north could be a good option.

Really would help the likes of Jamaal Lascelles develop at the top level.

Maarten Stekelenburg

The Magpies have been touted for a large overhaul in the goalkeeping department this summer as Rafa Benitez is prepared to cut ties with some of the unwanted players at the club, including out-of-favour Dutchman Tim Krul and want-away man Karl Darlow.

They’ve already loaned out flop Mats Selz to Anderlecht, so they will desperately be scrapping for a replacement and they have a perfect option that should be lined-up as soon as possible.

Following Jordan Pickford’s switch to Everton, the Toffees now have three Premier League quality shot-stoppers and the one who has to go is 35-year-old Maarten Stekelenburg – as our supporters in the tavern have been suggesting.

Boasting a huge amount of experience at international level, he could be a wise addition.
