Rangers Football Club are entering a new era under Steven Gerrard who’s been allocated the job of steering them away from years of disappointment trailing in the wake of their Old Firm rivals Celtic.
A host of names have been introduced by Gerrard in an attempt to re-brand the squad as his own – bringing with them fresh goals and objectives and far higher expectations. As a part of this initiative, fifteen players in total arrived in Glasgow this summer and it’s fair to say that some have been good, some have been bad, some have been terrible, and some have been excellent.
It’s always the way with bringing in so many transfers.
Players have a challenge on their hands now to impress the boss who will be looking to shave a few names from his squad come 2019.
With that in mind, here is one player that needs to play out of his skin otherwise he runs the risk of being axed next year…
Jon Flanagan
Things just haven’t seemed to have gone right for the ex-Liverpool man since his branding as the ‘Scouse Cafu’. And when we say things haven’t gone right, we mean the player’s career and ability has crashed in the most dramatic of ways.
It’s a wonder that Steven Gerrard even bothered to throw Flanagan a lifeline, but he did, and the gamble hasn’t paid off.
In Rangers crippling 4-3 defeat in the Europa League on Thursday, Flanagan’s mistakes in the defensive half led to a number of Spartak Moscow’s goals and attacking opportunities. And that’s just how the players season has gone so far.
His experience in the Premier League is clearly showing for nothing and he’s going to need to pick up the standard soon otherwise he’ll find himself out of the club.
