The Tottenham fans in Transfer Tavern love the attention that Mauricio Pochettino places on young players. Often keen to avoid big-money acquisitions, young players like Dele Alli and Harry Winks have taken centre stage at Spurs in recent years.
It’s clearly a method that is working, and so Pochettino should look to continue in that vein. There are a ton of young players in Europe that would benefit from Pochettino’s teachings, but one player that could be of particular benefit to both Tottenham and the player is Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.
Aouar, who is a current France under-21 international, has enjoyed a sensational campaign in France this season, picking up quite the reputation along the way. A number 8 by trade, the midfielder has really grown into his role this season. Despite being just 19-years-old, he provides fantastic composure, quality and technique through the middle-of-the-park in France. According to WhoScored.com, he has picked up an average rating of 7.54 in the Premier League this term, putting him amongst some of Europe’s best midfielders on current form. With 4 goals and 2 assists, his influence is clear.
He’s a fantastic dribbler, with his technique abundantly clear. Elsewhere, his skill, passing and movement off the ball make him the perfect central midfielder. Given Tottenham’s need for more central midfield depth – with Mousa Dembele coming to the end of his time in London – a move for Aouar would make perfect sense for the Lilywhites.
What’s more, the effect that Pochettino could have on the player could be massive. He’s an expert at bringing the best out of young players, and Aouar has already proven that he is good enough to play at the highest level. When you combine his quality with Pochettino’s talents – this is a match made in heaven. Between him and Harry Winks, Spurs could have a midfield pairing for the best part of a decade.
