When Paul Pogba arrived at Man Utd over the summer, the Red Devils in the Football Transfer Tavern were expecting him to make an immediate impact.
Pogba is a player that has been the standout figure in Serie A in recent years – and the Premier League wasn’t expected to have any lasting effect on his form.
However, since his arrival – he has disappointed. He hasn’t hit the heights that were expected of him, and in truth – the Man Utd fans in the Tavern think that he has been seriously poor.
There must be a root cause to the issues however, and as is so often the case in the Premier League – the buck stops with Jose Mourinho. He is clearly doing something to mismanage Pogba – and the Frenchman must demand that Mourinho changes something to ensure that he is playing as well as he can.
With that said, Pogba really should ask Jose Mourinho for these 2 favours
Positional Tweaks
At Juventus, Paul Pogba played in a variety of positions – but defensive midfield was never one of them.
The Frenchman is adequate defensively, but he does not excel in the area, and in truth – he would serve Mourinho far better in a different role.
He is particularly efficient as 1/3 of a midfield trio, and he is also very impressive as a number 10 – and these are both roles that Mourinho has been hesitant to utilise the midfielder in.
Pogba simply must ask Mourinho to play him in a role that he is comfortable in, or his form could worsen.
Michael Carrick
If Pogba is forced to play slightly deeper – there is only one man that can play alongside him.
Pogba will never be defensive, regardless of where he plays, and so he needs a solid, defensively minded midfielder alongside him – and Michael Carrick is that man.
Carrick has played more regularly recently, and it will come as no surprise to see Pogba improving alongside that.
Carrick would be the anchorman, whilst Pogba could be more adventurous and push balls forward. Chelsea used a similar system a few years ago with Matic and Fabregas – and it worked to devastating effect.
