Portsmouth History

Portsmouth Football Club was founded in 1898, and they have always played their matches at Fratton Park up to this day. In 1927, Pompey were promoted to the top flight of English football for the first time in their history, and they reached two FA Cup finals before winning the trophy with a 4-1 victory over Wolves in 1939. During this time, their stadium was further developed and the north stand was built.

Pompey enjoyed their golden era in the late 1950s to early 1960s, they incredibly managed to win the Division One title (now Premier League) back-to-back in 1949 and 1950. They were one of only five clubs to win the trophy in back-to-back seasons since the war – get the latest Portsmouth news from Fratton Park here!

Moving into the future, Pompey were crowned champions of Division One to claim their spot in the Premier League for the first time in 2002-03 – they scored an impressive 98 points, and won 29 of their 46 games. After winning promotion, Pompey enjoyed Premier League football for seven seasons and created many memorable memories during this time.

In 2008 they won the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Cardiff City at Wembley, and this earnt them qualification for European competition for the first time in their history. Pompey reached their fifth FA Cup final in 2010; however they narrowly suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, and were relegated back down to the Championship in the same season, as a financial crisis struck.

The Blues remained in the Championship for just two seasons before suffering further relegation down to League One in 2011-12, this was the first time since 1983 that Portsmouth dropped out of the top two divisions in England. Just one season after, they were relegated again, but this time to League Two which was a shock for English football.

They battled hard to win promotion back up to League One for four seasons, and triumphed in 2016-17 when they were crowned champions of the division – they are only one of five sides to win all four professional divisions in English football. Since then, Portsmouth managed to win their first EFL Trophy in 2018-19 after defeating Sunderland on penalties at Wembley, in front of over 85,000 spectators.

Today, Pompey are managed by Kenny Jackett who has been in charge since 2017. Despite narrowly missing out on automatic promotion last season, Jackett hopes to lead the Blues back up to the Championship where they should be at the least. They are currently in the play-off positions, but they can definitely go on to win the league title if they keep up their winning form – get the latest Portsmouth news from League One here!
