The World Cup can have some very negative repercussions for some of the teams in the Premier League. Often, it means that their most important players are out of action for much of pre-season, and that means that preparations for the league campaign are slowed down.
However, this can also mean that a few youngsters are given an opportunity that they might otherwise not get, and so if that’s the cases, they must take their chances.
One player at Chelsea this summer that simply must get the opportunity to take their chance is Reece James, who has been one of the best players in their developmental system over the last year.
The 18-year-old has been a part of the developmental system for a long time, and last season was a prolific one for him and his teammates. He played a key role as the Blues won the FA Youth Cup yet again, whilst he’s also won numerous trophies with the England national team over the years too.
A defender by trade, he’s able to play across the back-line to tremendous effect. Strong, quick, agile, technically gifted, James has all the qualities that it takes to succeed at the highest level, and the best part? He’s just 18-years-old. He has truly come on leaps and bounds over the last year.
Chelsea’s defence was an area of concern last season, and particularly at right-back. Neither Victor Moses or Davide Zappacosta were particularly impressive last term, and so there is an opening for someone like James to step in.
Pre-season could offer him the perfect chance to do just that.
