Tottenham could turn to free agent Ben Foster

Watford Ben Foster

Tottenham could ‘turn to’ free agent goalkeeper Ben Foster after the development of Hugo Lloris’ long term injury.

The Lowdown: Lloris sidelined…

The France international looks set to be out for the foreseeable future, dealing a blow to Spurs manager Antonio Conte given his undoubted experience.

Lloris is estimated to be out for around six-to-eight weeks with back-up keeper Fraser Forster, who signed in the summer window, looking set to be called in.

However, the Premier League top-four chasers lack cover behind the Englishman, with Daily Mirror journalist Mike Walters sharing news of a possible surprise addition.

The Latest: Spurs could ‘turn to’ Foster…

As per Walters, writing for The Mirror, Spurs could ‘turn to’ Foster, who is currently a free agent after leaving Watford last year.

The 39-year-old could ‘return’ to English top flight football even after his retirement but the Lilywhites would require ‘special dispensation’ from the Premier League.

The Verdict: Wise move?

Given both goalkeeping prospects Alfie Whiteman and Brandon Austin haven’t registered a senior appearance between them, it could be a wise move to consider signing Foster as emergency cover.

Tottenham are arguably in need of an experienced head behind Forster, especially if the unthinkable happens and the latter man also finds himself on the treatment table.

Former Watford and Man United keeper Foster comes as a brilliant short-term option in that regard, having made 519 senior appearances throughout a long career.

He also amassed eight England caps for his trouble with his last stint at Vicarage Road proving a successful one.

The shot-stopper was called a ‘top’ goalkeeper by ex-Hornets boss Xisco Munoz and we believe the move represents very little risk for Spurs.
