Tottenham: Marco Asensio being monitored by Spurs

Lucas Moura’s possible exit from Tottenham Hotspur could ‘open the door’ for the club to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Asensio on the move?

The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of this season, with Galacticos manager Carlos Ancelotti recently admitting that he doesn’t care whether or not the player signs an extension.

This could represent an opportunity for Spurs to strengthen their ranks in a relatively risk-free move financially, given the player’s soon-to-be status as a free agent.

This comes as Lucas, who also hasn’t put pen to paper on a new deal, seems set to leave the Premier League top-four chasers on a Bosman.

The Latest: Spurs eye move for Asensio…

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have taken an interest in Asensio and are monitoring him ahead of the summer transfer window.

It’s also explained that Lucas’ potential departure could ‘open the door’ for the 27-year-old’s arrival at Spurs, given that Antonio Conte‘s side will need a like-for-like winger to replace the Brazilian.

The Verdict: Right move?

Asensio is highly versatile and able to play across the attacking midfield line and further forward. However, since bursting on to the scene under Zinedine Zidane, he has somewhat declined after being billed as Real Madrid’s possible replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2018.

The attacker still possesses some quality, having racked up four goals and three assists inside just 599 La Liga minutes this season (WhoScored). However, having once been tipped for superstardom, it’s arguably nowhere the level that some may have expected from Asensio.

On a free transfer, this move would come with potential plus-points and warning signs for Spurs, and it would be a gamble by Fabio Paratici to allow the £167,000-per-week attacker a possible redemption in the English top flight.

Spanish football experts such as former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell have called Asensio technically ‘brilliant’ and ‘very, very good’ when at his best, but the question remains – can Tottenham recapture his very best?
