Tottenham: Major news on Sergio Reguilon’s future

Tottenham loanee Sergio Reguilon warms up with Atletico Madrid

Tottenham, Spurs. Sergio Reguilon, Atletico Madrid, Premier League

A significant update has come to light on the future of Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon amid his current loan spell at Atletico Madrid.

The Lowdown: Reguilon seals temporary move…

The Spaniard was allowed to leave on a temporary deal last summer with manager Antonio Conte apparently not seeing Reguilon as part of his Spurs plans.

Signed from Sevilla in the summer of 2020 under former boss Jose Mourinho, the left-back attempted to battle his way into the thoughts of Conte but couldn’t quite cut it as a preferred wing-back option.

The Premier League top four chasers currently have a plethora of players out on loan with some significant news now coming to light on the future of Reguilon.

The Latest: Spurs no longer want Reguilon…

According to Estadio Deportivo, via Sport Witness, the 26-year-old is no longer wanted at Tottenham and the north Londoners don’t expect to have him back in the squad next season.

Reguilon has struggled to really find his feet at Atletico, mainly thanks to inconsistency and fitness issues, but an injury to defender Reinildo has put him ‘under the spotlight’.

Diego Simeone’s side aren’t entirely convinced about signing him permanently, and with Spurs not interesting in reintegrating him either, Estadio claim Reguilon is now playing to ‘carve out a future’ for himself.

The Verdict: Crucial few months…

These next few months could be the most crucial of Reguilon’s career to date.

If Atletico and Spurs have adopted the same disinterest, he will have to showcase good form just to attract other suitors, a scenario chairman Daniel Levy will be praying for.

David Ginola

How much did Spurs pay to sign future legend and fan favourite David Ginola?

The defender signed for a fee rising to £32 million under Mourinho and Tottenham’s hierarchy will want to make back at least the majority of that figure this summer.

He can certainly display class when at his very best with pundit Noel Whelan calling him a ‘quality player’ last season.

Reguilon could need to find that spark again sooner rather than later for the sake of his career.
