Aston Villa: Darren Bent thinks Wesley needs to be replaced as Villans battle to stay up

Aston Villa: Darren Bent thinks Wesley needs to be replaced as Villans battle to stay up - Aston Villa

Former Aston Villa footballer Darren Bent believes that striker Wesley needs replacing after not living up to expectations at Villa Park since his summer move.

Wesley scored in last night’s 5-0 drubbing of Liverpool’s kids, though Bent thinks the club may need to find a better goal source as the Villans look set to be involved in a fight against relegation.

The Brazilian hitman overtook Bent as the club’s record buy in the summer, but has only scored five times since his switch.

Speaking to Football Insider before Tuesday’s game, Bent argued that Wesley is lacking in confidence having failed to hit the ground running – and Villa may need to take drastic action to avoid the drop.

He said: “I’ve watched Wesley closely and he just looks like a guy that has no confidence.

“He is trying everything he can, fans are getting on his back and the media, which is me included. I get on his back and I do it because Villa need goals.

“They’re in a relegation battle, no doubt about it, they need someone who can put the ball into the back of the net.

“Obviously, he showed signs early on he could be the guy, but unfortunately he hasn’t lived up to expectations.

“So I think Villa need to get someone in.”

Bent’s comments may have been slightly ill-timed with Wesley going on to increase his goal tally as Villa swept aside a young Liverpool team in the EFL Cup.

However, there is little getting away from the fact that their main striker still currently lags behind Jack Grealish and Conor Hourihane in the club’s scoring charts.

For a side battling to stay up – with the Villans only outside the drop zone on goal difference – Wesley’s input should perhaps be far greater considering his price tag, even if there is heavy pressure on his shoulders.

Jonathan Kodjia’s double yesterday may be giving Dean Smith something to think about, while as the January window looms, it may be a risk to keep faith in Wesley with Villa far from comfortable as the season reaches its midway stage – as Bent appears justified in showing his concerns.
