Loads of Aston Villa fans have been tearing into Tyrone Mings for his 'shocking' error in the build-up to Raheem Sterling's opening goal, as Dean Smith's side lost 3-0 at Manchester City.

Smith's men managed to hold on to a goalless scoreline in the opening half, as they restricted Pep Guardiola's Sky Blues to two shots on target from 14 efforts, despite the Etihad Stadium natives playing 165 of their 333 passes in Villa's defensive third (WhoScored).

The travelling Villans had the best chance to open the scoring in the first-half, too, when John McGinn forced Ederson into action when his a teasing curled effort from the edge of the box needed an excellent save from the Brazilian (Guardian).

Villa's hopes of taking something back to Birmingham to show for their efforts took a major dent just 20 seconds into the second-half, though, when Sterling slide the ball under Tom Heaton following a 'shocker' from Mings.

Gabriel Jesus managed to beat the 6 ft 3, one-time England international (TransferMarkt) in the air following a long-ball forward from Ederson, with the 5 ft 7 Brazilian's knockdown falling perfectly to Sterling for the Three Lions star to break away from a flat-footed Bjorn Engels and beat Heaton.

Mings would later earn some admiration back from the travelling Villa faithful when the 26-year-old cleared Jesus' effort off the line spectacularly, when Engels' ball out of defence went straight to Sterling who fed his unmarked teammate to strike.

Mings, Heaton and Engels would again be beaten when Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan added City's second and third goals, to close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table to three points, albeit having played a game more.

Villa fans, though, were not impressed with Mings' start to the second-half, with one supporter suggesting his recent England cap has disguised some of his issues.
