According to Argentinian outlet AS, Everton are closing in on the signing of Boca Juniors midfielder Wílmar Barrios.
Fellow Premier League rivals Tottenham were interested in the confrontational midfielder in the summer, but it looks as though The Toffees are going to win the race for the 25-year-old this January.
The defensive midfield position is one that Everton have targeted this January, with the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin not making the grade under manager Marco Silva at Goodison Park. Barrios will add depth there to go alongside Idriss Gueye and André Gomes. While this transfer goes a long way in helping the team, it actually means a whole lot more.
Everton are currently under a fair bit of pressure, as results have not gone their way lately. Their victory over minnows Lincoln City in the FA Cup at the weekend was only their second win in their past nine matches in all competitions, something that is simply not good enough for many Everton fans. However, another big signing sends out a statement similar to the signings that they made in the summer. The addition of the likes of Richarlison, Bernard and Yerry Mina in the summer created a positive atmosphere at Everton, and their performances seemed to reflect that attitude at the beginning of the season.
The addition of Barrios could once again inject that feel-good feeling into the Everton camp, and could signal a turnaround in fortunes this season. This could be the statement that the club need to make to get the fans back on their side.
