Everton: Garth Crooks hails Mason Holgate’s role in West Ham draw

Everton: Garth Crooks hails Mason Holgate’s role in West Ham draw - Everton

Everton’s Mason Holgate has earned himself a place in Garth Crooks’ Team of the Week following his performance in the Toffees’ 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Saturday.

It is not the first time the 23-year-old has been selected by Crooks this season – for this is the third time the centre-back has received such recognition for his performances this year.

Holgate’s flick-on was turned into the net by Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Everton’s equaliser at the weekend, while he has become a vital member of the squad over the last few months, occasionally filling in as a defensive midfielder – with Crooks previously highlighting the defender’s performances twice in December.

Crooks was again speaking highly of the Toffees man, saying: “I’ve been talking about Mason Holgate for some time and the young defender makes my TOTW for the third time this season. Holgate played a pivotal role in the point gained by Everton at West Ham.

“This lad is maturing into a top-class defender. This is a much more resilient team under Carlo Ancelotti with a developing sense of professionalism about their performances. Under caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson there was bags of effort and lots of passion. Under Ancelotti, there’s a strategy.”

Should Everton sign Everton Soares?

It was not only Crooks who recognised Holgate’s fine display against the Hammers, with WhoScored making him their Man of the Match, giving the player at match rating of 8.56/10. That rating certainly seems deserved, with Holgate making the joint-most clearances (five) and interceptions (two) in the Everton team, while Yerry Mina was the only player on the pitch who topped his tally for tackles (four).

WhoScored suggests it was his best performance of the campaign yet, while five of his top six displays in the Premier League this season have come since the sacking of Marco Silva, suggesting he has been flourishing under the guidance of Duncan Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti.

At 23, the idea that Holgate may not have even reached the peak of his powers is sure to be a promising sign for Everton going forward, and with fans demonstrating their support for their man in recent weeks, it is no wonder that Crooks is repeatedly showing his own admiration for the defender this season.
