Jamaal Lascelles’ international snub has frustrated plenty of Newcastle fans

Gareth Southgate announced his squad for the upcoming fixtures against Croatia and Spain in the UEFA Nations League last week and plenty of Newcastle fans were fuming that neither Jamaal Lascelles or Jonjo Shelvey made the cut. However, when James Tarkowski pulled out with injury and Lewis Dunk was selected, it’s made a lot of Geordies even more angry at Lascelles snub.

Jamaal Lascelles has been one of the standout stars for The Magpies since they were relegated to the Championship. The centre-back has excelled under Rafa Benitez, helping his side win the Championship and then achieving a 10th placed finish in their first season back in the Premier League and it seems crazy that The Magpies’ captain and standout defender is yet to rewarded with an England call-up for his efforts.

If Lascelles can help his side battle against relegation this season and avoid a third relegation since Mike Ashley bought the club then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be given a shot in the England set-up. Gareth Southgate seems determined to blood the youth in his squad and recently called up the likes of James Maddison, Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount and Nathaniel Chalobah, all of which are without a single cap, and the inclusion of Lascelles would be far from controversial considering who has been picked.

You can read The Geordies’ thoughts on whether Dunk is better than Lascelles here:

The Geordies are fuming that Lascelles has been overlooked in favour of Dunk and will be expecting their captain to get an England call-up sooner or later.
