A whole number of the Toon Army have reacted angrily after Newcastle United announced Matt Ritchie has signed a new three-year contract with the club.
The 30-year-old told NUFC TV: “It’s obviously something that I wanted. Since I came to the club, it’s been a successful period and one that I want to continue being involved in. Hopefully I can be part of the future.
“When you sign at a club, you want to go there and make an impact and if you can be part of that club moving forward for a long time, it’s something that is nice. I moved around in my younger years on loan but to come somewhere and get settled and be part of the progress of the football club is great.”
The announcement has received a fair amount of criticism from a large portion of the Magpies’ fan base with many supporters questioning the logic behind the board’s decision. One fan remarked the midfielder is on a “downward trajectory” with another labelling Ritchie as a “weak link.”
Ritchie has scored 22 goals and created 26 assists in 139 appearances throughout his time at St James’ Park, having joined the club from Bournemouth in the summer of 2016, although the Scotsman has failed to score this season and only provided 1 assist in 14 games in all competitions (Transfermarkt).
The former Scottish international won 16 caps and scored 3 goals for the national team (Transfermarkt).
Newcastle face Premier League rivals Southampton tomorrow with both sides eager to break away from the relegation zone. Ritchie is one of the most experienced players in the squad and his influence on the younger players could prove vital towards the end of the season.

Ritchie is slowing down. 3 years seems a long time to keep him around for. Hopefully he's a spark from the bench but we'll see.

Another 3 years of Ritchie? 🤦♂️

Not sure either deserve a contract. Ritchie tries hard but is on a downward trajectory.

Jonjo for sure, Ritchie is a championship player.

Considering Jonjo is the only one at the club capable of passing a ball forwards then yes yes yes !! Matt Ritchie on the other hand for me is finished and a weak link now , his heart is in it but that’s not enough .

Apart from the 100% effort Ritchie puts in I think he'd be more suited to a lower placed team as personally I don't think he's the player he was, whereas shelvey not saying he deserves one just i think his good days where he has the creativity to unlock a pass & can see reason y
