Tottenham fans on Twitter desperate to tie up Vertonghen contract

Jan Vertonghen is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and alongside Toby Alderweireld he’s a class act at the heart of Tottenham’s defence. According to The Telegraph, the 31-year-old wants a contract offer to extend his current deal by more than just 12 months, and the fans are desperate to give him what he wants.

The last thing that Tottenham fans want is to see Vertonghen go down the same road that Alderweireld has gone down. Alderweireld’s contract talks broke down completely around this time last year and now the club look destined to lose him for a measly fee of just £25 million, owing to a release clause that will be activated when the club activate his one-year extension in the summer.

In contrast, Vertonghen has never had an issue with a contract before and whilst it’s easy to forget how good he is whilst he’s out injured at the moment, the defender has been at the club since 2012 and has been a staple of this new revitalised Tottenham team under Mauricio Pochettino. Poch himself will be desperate to keep Vertonghen on board and will be in Daniel Levy’s ear to try and get his defender more than the one-year extension that it looks like is currently being offered.

As you can see, it’s pretty clear that Tottenham fans everywhere love Vertonghen and will be desperate to keep him at the club for as long as possible.
